This cycling tour takes you past archaeological treasures and through picturesque Limburg villages. The route starts near the Maas at the remains of the Schanstoren in Arcen, once part of a large city wall. You can follow the route using the cycling node network, which means you can start at any point along the route.
For the best experience, first download the Archeo Route Limburg app on your phone. This is where your journey into a world of defense and history begins.
Hamlets:
The peaceful hamlets of Wielder, Lovendaal, and Houthuizen look like they come straight out of a fairytale. In Houthuizen, burial mounds from the Iron Age have been discovered. Near the village of Lomm, you step into a sacred past, a place of rituals from the Iron Age, where Roman finds have also been made. The mysterious atmosphere makes you pause and reflect on the transition between life and death, with the Maas as a silent witness. Through the Archeo Route Limburg app, you can see and hear more!
The route continues through charming villages like Lottum, famous for its roses, and Genooi, which remains a pilgrimage site.
Venlo:
In the village of Blerick, near Venlo, there was once a massive Spanish fort: Fort Sint Michiel, the Spanish Fort in Venlo. You can admire the ruins of this defense structure today. These historic foundations are now at the heart of the new Kazerne Kwartier neighborhood. Through the Archeo Route Limburg app, you’ll learn even more.
In Venlo, you arrive at the historic Keulse Poort, once the shortest trade route to Cologne. This gate brings the Middle Ages to life with stories of merchants and travelers entering and leaving the city.
With the Archeo Route Limburg app and virtual archaeologist Archie, you cycle through a world where rituals, defense, and daily life from the past come together in a virtual time journey.
