Heritage is everything we have inherited from previous generations and consider important enough to preserve and pass on to future generations. Limburg’s heritage is special because it combines a unique language, landscape, history and traditions that you won’t find anywhere else in the Netherlands in exactly the same form.

Language and identity

An important part of Limburg’s heritage is the Limburgish language, a collection of dialects officially recognised as a regional language of the Netherlands. The language has many variants and is still spoken on a daily basis. As such, it makes an important contribution to the identity and sense of community among Limburg’s residents.

Religious and cultural traditions

Limburg has traditionally had a strong Catholic tradition. This is reflected, amongst other things, in processions, chapels, monasteries, communion services and various folk festivals. Carnival also holds a special place within the province and forms an important part of its cultural heritage.

Intangible heritage

As well as buildings and landscapes, Limburg’s heritage also includes intangible elements such as music, marksmen’s guilds, regional cuisine and folklore. Limburg’s marksmen’s guilds are a well-known example of this and still play an important role within many local communities.

Mining heritage

Coal mining had a major impact on South Limburg in the twentieth century. The former mining region has produced a distinctive cultural heritage, comprising, amongst other things, monuments, former mining buildings and the personal stories of miners.

Unique landscape

The Limburg landscape is distinguished by its hilly character. Areas such as the Vijlenerbos and the Sint-Pietersberg have a landscape profile that is unique within the Netherlands.

Historic towns and castles

Limburg boasts a large number of castles, country houses and historic town centres. Maastricht is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands and has a rich history dating back to Roman times. Valkenburg is also renowned for its historic heritage, including the marl caves and underground passageways.
