Boerenschans

In the Middle Ages, the farmer's entrenchment was intended as a refuge for the peasantry from wandering gangs of looters and soldiers. In the surroundings of the Loobeek valley there was a peasant entrenchment in the Middle Ages. This entrenchment is reconstructed in Merselo with a horseshoe-shaped moat and a defensive wall three meters high. This wall will be planted with thorny bushes and enclose an inner area about the size of a soccer pitch. A watchtower will be built within the walls. On the narrow side of the horseshoe-shaped wall is the entrance to the entrenchment, which can be closed off.
