During this walk you will only get to see the Meuse for a short while, but experience that the river has left a big mark on the village. Opposite the church, you walk into Buggenums Broek, called 'Mooi Buggenum'. In 1993 and 1995, water stood up to 1 metre high in the houses on the Dorpsstraat you see to your right. In July 2021, the village crawled through the eye of the needle. The water came right up to the edge of the dike at the highest water level. You continue along the road and after you leave Buggenum you walk along a gravel road through the Buggenumse Veld.
You can enjoy the vastness here. On the left you can see the forests of the Leudal, in front of you the village of Neer and on the other side of the Meuse the skyline of Roermond. During the floods, the Maas water also reached the buildings of Buggenum via this lower land. The path starting at node 72 is part of a unique network of escape routes. These 'thoroughfares' are used at times when the lower streets flood. Take a quick walk inside the Aldegundis chapel. Saint Aldegundis is invoked for protection against cancer.
