The Peatcutter Meijel

The work of art The Peat Harvester was designed in 1991 by Truus Coumans. The stocky peat digger is busy cutting the lead-heavy peat out of the peat bank with his peat shovel. The face has been clearly worked out, the rest left coarse, almost muddy.

Peat cutters

For centuries, people from Meijel went into the Peel to cut peat. Every year, they would stake a field of peat, which was used in the stove and for processing manure in the stables.

When the Rabobank at Kerkveld in Meijel expanded in 1991, this statue was donated to the community of Meijel as a tangible reminder of the peat workers. After its placement, the statue was moved twice. During the renovation of the village centre in 2015, the statue was moved to its current location, along the oldest road through the Peel.
