Helden is situated on high sandy ground. The height is about 33 metres. The land is used for agriculture, but in the southeast lies the Boekenderbos, mainly coniferous forest on former heath and shifting sand. To the north, the Kwistbeek runs eastwards.
The forests mainly consist of coniferous woods laid down in the 19th century, which had to rein in the shifting sands. Between these higher-lying forests and the Meuse lies a varied landscape with various smaller forest plots and agricultural land. Birds such as the turnstone, golden oriole and partridge live here. The Donkervennen is an alder wood. Particular plants in the area are: spotted arum, brook furrow and royal moor grass. Among others, the Bosbeek and the Tasbeek, in fact remnants of old Meuse beds, run through the area.
Important information: The entire cycle route can only be cycled from 1 April to 30 October. The foot- and bike ferry at Neer-Rijkel runs according to the timetable then.
